What Peer Mentors Have to Say

Picture

Sally & Lilith Reflect on their 2 year friendship!

Sally and Lilith, do you have a favorite memory together?
Lilith: Last year, in the winter, when they still had the swing up. We went to sit on it and the swing slid out from under us and we fell. We sat there looking at each other for a few seconds, then we burst out laughing.
Sally Chimed in: It was a little painful, but that’s ok, it made for a really good memory

Do you have a favorite activity that you like to do together?
Sally: We play mancala and the bee game a lot.
Lilith Added: But I am a little sulky because Sally usually wins the bee game.

What is one thing your mentee or mentor has taught you, that you will take with you when you graduate or move on to 7th grade?
Sally: Honestly, a lot of things. She taught me to be more creative because she is so creative. She taught me to not take things so seriously. It sounds pretty cheesy, but it’s true.
Lilith: Yeah, I’m a pretty chill person.
Sally: I appreciate that about Lilith because sometimes it’s hard for me not to think about everything that is coming next.
Lilith: Sally has taught me not to worry about testing so much. She supported me in being calmer about it all.

What is one thing you will miss about your mentee when you go to college next year?
Sally: So many things. Mentoring was a nice thing to do away from reality- it was nice to have the time to play games, talk and have fun. I will miss her perspective on things as well. I’ve been here at Twinfield since preschool, and I’ve been through what she’s been through, and it’s cool to hear a different perspective. She will talk about something and I will think, ‘I remember that!’ but her story will be different than mine. It’s kinda cool.

"It's almost healing to be a mentor. Just being a mentor on it's own, it feels good, you're doing good. And You're making yourself better and you're making somebody else feel better. It's awesome. I LOVE it." -Asia 2016

"I don't think a lot of the high school students realize how much joy they can bring to a younger kids life, until they do something like mentoring. For some of the kids, their mentor is the one person they always look forward to seeing :)  My favorite part about it all is definietly seeing the look on Izabella's face when I go and get her from her classroom, also doing really cool science experiements (specifically making slime)." -Kendra 2016

"I really like the relationship that August and I have developed overtime. When we first started hanging out it was kind of like 'oh we don't know each other' so we were just kind of timid around each other and now we know each others lives and we can ask questions about each other and it's really awesome. Awesome, not only for her I think, but also for me. I've had a lot of fun and I think she has too. Definitely do it." -Dakota 2016

"It seems like at first that you're not really making a difference, but you just have to be happy to see them. It's just so simple, like all you need to do is be engaging. I mean, as long as you're running around you can be happy because you're in the moment, you don't have time to think about anything else, you're just having fun." -Isaiah 2016

"Being a mentor is a great opportunity to not only help out the kids, but also just like in a greater sense help out and give back to the community. It's not like a one sided benefit, it also helps us as students out and as mentors out." -Jakob 2016

"It's not the activity that connects us, it's the time we spend talking. It's good for him to have someone to talk to who has already been through the struggles of middle school." - Eli 2016
